In June 2026, Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) held Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) training for community committee members in Juong and Adok payams, Leer County, Unity State. The training was part of the Building Resilient Livelihoods through Farming and Fishing project, funded by Alongside Hope, which came to an end in September 2026.

Forty AAP committee members, 20 women and 20 men, took part, together with two HRSS staff.

What the training covered
- Community engagement: the role of committees in keeping communication open between affected households and HRSS.
- Feedback and complaints: accessible reporting, confidential handling of concerns and referral through the complaints and response mechanism.
- Participation in decisions: inclusive consultation on community needs and priorities, with attention to women and vulnerable households.
- Transparency: clear communication of project objectives, eligibility criteria and planned assistance.
- Safeguarding and PSEA: safe conduct, prevention of abuse and appropriate reporting of sensitive concerns.

Why it matters
The training prepared committee members to act as a link between affected households and HRSS during livelihoods activities, to represent community concerns and to support safe feedback and referral. It also promoted the inclusion of women and vulnerable community members in decisions that affect livelihoods assistance. The aim was accountable delivery of farming and fishing assistance to displaced, flood-affected and other vulnerable households.

Looking ahead
Improved trust, safer reporting and more responsive assistance are the benefits we hope to see. They will need follow-up to confirm.

Thank you to Alongside Hope and to the committee members in Juong and Adok for their commitment.
