Thematic Areas

Gender-Based Violence

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is dedicated to increasing multi-sectoral capacity to prevent and respond effectively to gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices, including child marriage. Recognizing the widespread impact of GBV on women, girls, and vulnerable populations such as persons with disabilities, HRSS prioritizes comprehensive strategies that address prevention, risk mitigation, and survivor-centered response.

Our approach includes delivering critical services such as psychosocial support, legal aid, and safe shelter to survivors, while coordinating closely with local authorities, health providers, and community leaders to ensure a holistic and timely response. We actively engage in community sensitization and advocacy campaigns to challenge harmful social norms and raise awareness about the rights and protection of women and girls.

HRSS also strengthens referral pathways and builds partnerships to enhance access to essential services for GBV survivors, ensuring inclusivity and protection for marginalized groups. Through training and capacity building of stakeholders across sectors—including health, protection, and justice—we aim to create a coordinated network capable of addressing GBV comprehensively.

Economic Empowerment for Women, Girls, and Youth

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) prioritizes the economic and socio-political empowerment of women, girls, and youth—especially those from mariginalized groups. Our programs focus on strengthening livelihoods by providing targeted training and support for income-generating activities, both in cash and in-kind. Through these initiatives, Youth, women and girls acquire practical skills such as fuel-efficient stove making, brick production, sewing, beading, crocheting, bread making, bed sheet tailoring, hair braiding, and pottery.

Beyond skill-building, HRSS fosters an enabling environment where women, girls, and marginalized groups can actively participate in discussions and decisions affecting their lives. We facilitate safe spaces that promote social empowerment and community engagement. Our approach also includes providing individual counseling and psychosocial support to survivors of violence and hardship, helping them heal and develop the confidence to become advocates for their communities.

All these activities are delivered through our dedicated women and girls-friendly centers spread across the counties where we operate. By combining livelihood support with social empowerment and psychosocial care, HRSS aims to build resilient individuals and communities capable of breaking cycles of poverty and exclusion, ultimately contributing to sustainable development and peace in South Sudan.

WASH

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is dedicated to ensuring vulnerable communities have reliable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. Recognizing the critical role that WASH plays in preventing disease and promoting overall health, our programs focus on improving both infrastructure and community practices.

We work to enhance access to safe drinking water by supporting water supply systems and distributing essential WASH non-food items (NFIs) such as household water storage containers, collapsible jerrycans, buckets, aqua taps, water filter cloths, and soap for personal hygiene. These items are critical for reducing contamination and ensuring clean water storage and usage at the household level.

In addition to infrastructure and supplies, HRSS promotes hygiene awareness through targeted behavior change campaigns designed to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. We engage communities through education on handwashing, safe water handling, sanitation practices, and menstrual hygiene management.

By integrating hardware provision with hygiene promotion, HRSS aims to reduce disease incidence, improve health outcomes, and strengthen community resilience. Our WASH interventions are tailored to the needs of displaced populations, returnees, and host communities affected by conflict and natural disasters, ensuring sustainable access to these vital services.

Food Security and Livelihoods

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is committed to improving vulnerable communities’ access to sustainable food sources and income opportunities, with special attention to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (S/GBV) and conflict-related sexual violence. Our programs support these communities to rebuild their livelihoods through practical, community-centered agricultural initiatives.

We empower beneficiaries to increase food production by promoting subsistence farming and the establishment of kitchen gardens, providing essential inputs such as seeds, tools, and technical guidance. These activities not only enhance household food security but also contribute to improved nutrition for women, children, and families.

In addition to agricultural support, HRSS facilitates the creation and strengthening of income-generating activities targeted at women, girls, and youth. We organize and train cooperative societies and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to foster financial inclusion and collective economic resilience. Financial literacy training is an integral component of our approach, equipping community members with the knowledge and skills needed to manage resources effectively, plan for the future, and access financial services.

Through these integrated interventions, HRSS aims to build resilient, self-reliant communities capable of overcoming the economic hardships caused by conflict and displacement, contributing to long-term stability and prosperity in South Sudan.

Shelter and Non-food items

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) collaborates closely with partners to deliver essential protection and lifesaving support to populations displaced by conflict and climate-related disasters. Our Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFIs) program targets internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and returnees, ensuring they receive timely and appropriate assistance to meet their basic needs and restore a sense of safety and dignity.

We provide durable shelter solutions and essential household items such as blankets, cooking utensils, mats, and hygiene kits, which are critical for daily survival in displacement settings. Our interventions also include the distribution of unconditional cash transfers to vulnerable individuals, enabling them to address urgent needs according to their priorities and facilitating anticipatory action to mitigate emerging risks.

HRSS prioritizes a rights-based and inclusive approach, ensuring that assistance reaches the most at-risk groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and elderly individuals. We coordinate with humanitarian actors and local authorities to enhance coverage, avoid duplication, and promote community participation in the design and delivery of services.

Through our Shelter and NFI program, HRSS strives to reduce vulnerability, improve living conditions, and support displaced families on their path toward recovery and durable solutions.

Health and Nutrition

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is committed to improving the nutrition and health outcomes of vulnerable populations, with a focus on children and women. Our programs provide critical information and services aimed at promoting well-being and reducing malnutrition within these high-risk groups.

We pay special attention to women and girls who are survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and conflict-related sexual violence, offering targeted support through training on kitchen gardening and the preparation of nutritious meals for their families. These skills empower survivors to enhance food security and improve dietary diversity at the household level.

HRSS centers serve as vital access points where children and women presenting signs of malnutrition receive timely referrals to appropriate health services. We collaborate closely with local health providers to ensure comprehensive care, including growth monitoring, therapeutic feeding, and maternal-child health interventions.

In addition to direct nutrition support, HRSS conducts community outreach and awareness campaigns to educate families on healthy practices, hygiene, and the importance of balanced diets. By integrating health education with practical support, we strive to build resilient communities capable of sustaining improved health and nutrition outcomes in South Sudan’s challenging context.

Reproductive Health services and HIV prevention and management

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS), in partnership with key stakeholders, is dedicated to increasing access to essential reproductive health information and services for crisis-affected populations, with a particular focus on women and adolescent girls. Our programs address critical needs in maternal health, family planning, and HIV prevention and management.

Through our One-Stop Centers and Women and Girls Friendly Spaces, HRSS offers integrated, confidential, and survivor-centered services that ensure comprehensive care. These centers provide maternal health consultations, antenatal and postnatal care, and access to a range of family planning options to empower women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

We also deliver HIV prevention education and testing services, working to reduce new infections and link those living with HIV to appropriate treatment and support. Our approach combines clinical services with community outreach, raising awareness about safe practices, stigma reduction, and the importance of regular testing.

By providing a safe and supportive environment, HRSS enables women and adolescent girls affected by conflict and displacement to access vital health services that protect their well-being and promote healthier futures for themselves and their families.

Sexual Reproductive Health Rights

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is committed to improving access to integrated sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) services for adolescent girls and women of reproductive age. Our approach combines awareness-raising, clinical care, and capacity building to address the complex health needs of this vulnerable group.

HRSS conducts regular awareness and information sessions aimed at educating communities about SRHR, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making, consent, and bodily autonomy. These efforts work to dismantle stigma and empower women and girls to seek the care and support they need.

A critical component of our work is the provision of comprehensive clinical management for survivors of sexual violence, including rape. Our one-stop centers and health facilities offer confidential medical treatment, counseling, and mental health and psychosocial support services tailored to survivors’ needs. We prioritize survivor-centered care that respects dignity and promotes healing.

Additionally, HRSS facilitates specialized training for healthcare providers on the clinical management of rape cases, enhancing their skills and ensuring quality, timely, and sensitive care for survivors. Through these integrated services, HRSS strives to uphold the sexual and reproductive rights of women and girls and improve their overall health outcomes in South Sudan’s challenging context.

Education

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is dedicated to increasing enrollment and improving access to quality education for children, with a particular focus on marginalized and conflict-affected communities. Our approach combines capacity building, scholastic support, and infrastructure improvements to create conducive learning environments.

We provide targeted training for teachers to enhance their pedagogical skills, ensuring that children receive quality instruction that fosters academic achievement and personal development. Alongside this, HRSS supports schools with essential learning materials and scholastic supplies to improve classroom resources and student engagement.

Recognizing that health and hygiene are vital to sustained school attendance and performance, HRSS promotes access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities within schools and their surrounding communities. Our programs include hygiene education campaigns aimed at encouraging positive behaviors among students, teachers, and families to reduce waterborne illnesses and create healthier school environments.

By integrating educational quality improvements with WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) interventions, HRSS strives to increase school retention, boost academic outcomes, and contribute to the long-term development of South Sudan’s children and youth.

Child Protection

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is steadfast in its commitment to protecting children from violence, exploitation, abuse, and neglect. We work tirelessly alongside national governments, local authorities, and partner organizations to strengthen systems that prevent harm and respond effectively when violations occur.

Our child protection interventions focus on creating safe environments where children can thrive free from fear and danger. We facilitate coordinated efforts to raise awareness about children’s rights, promote reporting mechanisms, and provide support services to survivors of abuse and exploitation.

A key area of focus for HRSS is advocating against harmful practices such as early and forced child marriage. Through community engagement, advocacy campaigns, and collaboration with traditional leaders and policymakers, we strive to eliminate this harmful practice in the communities where we operate and across South Sudan.

By empowering children, families, and communities with knowledge and tools to safeguard childhood, HRSS contributes to building a protective environment that nurtures the well-being, development, and dignity of every child.

Conflict Prevention, Mitigation, Transformation, and Peace-building

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) is committed to promoting sustainable peace by strengthening local structures and cultural mechanisms that support conflict prevention, mitigation, and transformation. Our work centers on empowering communities to manage disputes peacefully and foster social cohesion amidst South Sudan’s complex and often fragile context.

In partnership with local leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, HRSS facilitates dialogue platforms, peace forums, and community reconciliation activities that address root causes of conflict and build mutual understanding. These initiatives encourage inclusive participation, ensuring that women, youth, and marginalized groups have a voice in peace processes.

Through capacity building and awareness raising, we equip community members with conflict resolution skills, enabling them to resolve disputes locally before they escalate into violence. HRSS also supports the integration of traditional and formal peace mechanisms, fostering collaborative approaches to conflict management.

By promoting peaceful coexistence and resilience, HRSS contributes to creating stable and secure communities where development and human rights can flourish, laying the foundation for long-term peace and prosperity in South Sudan.

Nutrition and Health

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) integrates nutrition and health programming to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly women and children. Our holistic approach addresses immediate nutritional needs while strengthening long-term health outcomes.

We conduct nutrition screening and provide therapeutic feeding for individuals suffering from malnutrition, ensuring timely and effective treatment. HRSS also offers maternal and child health support services, including health education, immunization campaigns, and referral to specialized care when needed.

Our programs emphasize community engagement and awareness-raising to promote healthy behaviors and prevent nutrition-related illnesses. By partnering closely with local health facilities and stakeholders, HRSS works to enhance the accessibility and quality of essential health services in underserved areas.

Through these integrated efforts, we strive to reduce malnutrition rates, improve maternal and child health indicators, and build resilient communities capable of sustaining healthy lives despite the challenges posed by conflict and displacement in South Sudan.

Climate Adaptation

Hope Restoration South Sudan (HRSS) recognizes climate change as a critical driver of hunger, malnutrition, and poverty in vulnerable communities. To address these challenges, we integrate climate adaptation strategies across our programs, empowering communities to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to changing environmental conditions.

Our focus is on supporting populations most acutely affected by climate impacts, helping them build resilience through sustainable practices. We provide training and knowledge-sharing on climate-smart agriculture, including cultivation and harvesting techniques tailored to the evolving climate. This includes promoting the use of climate-resilient crops and distributing high-quality seeds that can withstand droughts, floods, and other climate-related stresses.

By embedding these adaptive measures within livelihoods and food security interventions, HRSS aims to reduce the vulnerability of communities to climate shocks and enhance their capacity to sustain agricultural productivity and food availability.

Through community engagement, technical support, and collaboration with local partners, we strive to create lasting, environmentally sensitive solutions that contribute to food security, economic stability, and improved wellbeing in South Sudan’s climate-affected regions.
