On 23 October, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, hosted church leaders, faith-based organisations and government officials at Lambeth Palace to discuss the conflict in South Sudan. Our Founder and Executive Director, Angelina Jial, took part in the meeting.

A meeting for peace
The meeting was jointly convened by the Church of England and Christian Aid as South Sudan prepares for elections. Representatives of the South Sudan Council of Churches described the political and humanitarian situation and the role churches are playing in peacebuilding. They presented a letter and statement calling for international support.

A message of solidarity
In reply, Archbishop Sarah Mullally, the Archbishop of Westminster, Richard Moth, and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, the Right Rev Gordon Kennedy, presented the South Sudanese delegation with a letter. They committed to stand with South Sudan in solidarity and prayer, and said that far more than elections will be needed for peace.

HRSS at the table
Angelina shared the unfolding humanitarian situation in South Sudan and how aid cuts have affected an already dire situation. Her visit followed two weeks of the Autumn Roadshow across England and Wales, where she met churches and other stakeholders.

Thank you
We thank the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lambeth Palace for hosting the meeting, Christian Aid and CAFOD for making our visit possible, and every church and supporter who has welcomed us along the way.
